Direct4.me will unveil its Fifth Generation of Parcel Lockers at Parcel+Post Expo 2026, taking place on 23-24 September at ExCeL London.
For the first time, we will present the complete Fifth Generation concept: our latest autonomous outdoor parcel lockers, together with a new locker platform developed specifically for indoor locations.
Both are built around the same idea: parcel locker infrastructure should adapt to the location and the needs of the network - not the other way around.
Fifth Generation: Autonomous Outdoor
Direct4.me has been developing autonomous parcel lockers since 2018. The Fifth Generation builds on years of field experience and thousands of lockers already operating in real parcel networks.
At its core is energy efficiency.
Ultra-low energy consumption, intelligent solar charging and flexible power options allow Fifth Generation outdoor lockers to operate autonomously or connected to the grid, depending on what makes most sense for each location.
Solar, battery or grid
This means operators are no longer limited to locations where grid power happens to be available. A locker can be deployed where the network actually needs it - from high-volume urban locations to residential areas and smaller rural communities.
But autonomy is only part of the story.
One locker. Multiple lives.
Parcel volumes change. Networks evolve. A location that needs additional capacity today may need less capacity tomorrow.
The Fifth Generation was designed around that reality.
A Direct4Lean module can operate as an extension of a larger installation today and be redeployed as a standalone locker tomorrow. No factory modification is required.
The same philosophy applies to functionality. Direct4Lean can be upgraded in the field into Direct4Smart, without returning the locker to a workshop.
For operators, this means hardware can evolve together with the network instead of being locked into its original configuration.
Fifth Generation: Now Indoors
London will also mark another important step for Direct4.me: the Fifth Generation is moving indoors.
Indoor parcel lockers operate in a very different environment from outdoor lockers. There is no rain, snow or wind to engineer around, floor space is valuable, and installation often has to happen inside an existing retail, residential or office building.
So instead of simply taking an outdoor locker and putting it inside, we designed a platform specifically for indoor deployment.
The result is a lightweight construction with higher compartment density per square metre and installation designed to take as little as 15 minutes, without cranes or forklifts.
The same modular and upgradeable philosophy remains: Direct4Lean can be upgraded to Direct4Smart in the field, while different configurations can be adapted to the requirements of each location.
The objective is simple: make indoor locker infrastructure easier to install, easier to scale and more efficient in the space it occupies.
Built to change with the network
For us, Fifth Generation is not about adding one new feature to a parcel locker. It is about looking at the complete lifecycle of the infrastructure.
- Where can it be installed?
- How much energy does it consume?
- How difficult is it to install?
- Can capacity be moved when demand changes?
- Can functionality be upgraded without replacing the hardware?
- And what does all of this mean for the operator’s long-term cost?
These questions shaped both our new autonomous outdoor and indoor platforms.
